Murmi is an app for losing weight on a calorie deficit together with friends: food from a photo, steps, clubs, water and fasting (“Murmi,” “we,” “the app”). This page explains in plain language what data the app uses, where it goes and how to delete it.
The short version
- No sign-up needed: no email, no phone number, no password.
- Your food diary, water, weight, fasts and habits are stored on your phone.
- Only what AI, friends, notifications and subscriptions need to work is sent to our server, and only when you actually use those features.
- No ads. We don’t sell your data or share it with advertisers.
What’s stored on your phone
Your fasts and their history, the water you drink, your weight, food entries, habits, settings and goals. All of this lives in the app’s storage on your device and works without an internet connection. If you delete the app, this data is deleted with it.
Apple Health
With your permission, Murmi reads steps, distance, active energy, weight and sleep from Apple Health to calculate your calorie budget and show everything in one place. It writes the weight, water, food and workouts you log back to Apple Health so your other apps can see them.
- Health data is never used for advertising, profiling or training AI models, and is never shared with third parties.
- It reaches our server in only one case: if you use the Together tab. Then your daily summary for friends includes your step count for the day (more on this below).
- You can revoke access at any time: iOS Settings → Health → Data Access & Devices → Murmi.
Photo food logging and the AI coach
When you take a photo of your plate or ask the coach a question, the photo and text are sent to our server and from there to an AI model that counts the calories and writes the reply. These are models from third-party AI providers, sometimes via intermediary services that pass the request on to the model.
- Nothing is sent until you tap the button yourself.
- The request includes what’s needed to answer: the photo, your caption or question, a summary of today (fasting, food, workouts, calorie target) and the details you entered yourself — weight, height, age and sex. No name or contact details are included.
- We don’t store photos or chats on our server. Each request is processed and then forgotten; the only thing we keep is a count of how many times you used AI that day.
- Voice input is transcribed by Apple itself, on your phone whenever possible. Only the finished text is sent to the server; no audio is recorded.
- AI answers are estimates, not medical advice.
Together: friends and clubs
The Together tab is optional. If you turn it on, a profile is created on our server: the name you chose, an emoji and your country (so a flag can appear next to your name).
Once a day, the app sends a short summary: whether you kept your fast, how many steps you took and how much water you drank. You can remove food from the summary, and weight isn’t sent at all by default — these are toggles in the tab’s settings. The summary is visible only to people you’ve added by invitation and to members of clubs you’ve joined.
- Detailed summaries are kept for 30 days. After that, all that remains of each day is a “goal met” mark, so your streak still counts.
- You can delete your profile in the app. Your friends, summaries, clubs and reactions are erased from the server along with it.
Notifications
If you allow notifications, we store your device token so we can remind you when your fast ends or let you know a friend cheered you on. You can turn them off in iOS Settings.
Being honest about security
We protect the data on our server as best we can, but no one can promise 100% protection from hacking. That’s exactly why so little reaches our server: most of it lives only on your phone.
Murmi is not a medical app
- Murmi doesn’t diagnose, treat or replace a doctor. Numbers, tips and AI replies are a guide, not medical advice.
- Talk to a doctor before you start losing weight, change your diet or fast.
- Don’t eat at a calorie deficit or fast if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have (or have had) an eating disorder, are underweight or under 18.
- Diabetes, heart, kidney or liver disease, or taking medication: change your diet only with your doctor’s approval.
- If you feel unwell, stop, break your fast and eat something.
By using the app, you change your diet at your own risk.
Changes
